Why are they called Holland covers?
There is this thing in historical novels where the author describes a room with the upholstered furniture covered with white fabric cloth to protect it. The name for it was holland covers. It was something you did as a maintenance chore for when you were away from the house, travelling.
What is Holland linen?
Originally, the name for any fine, plain-weave, Linen cloth manufactured in the Netherlands. Holland cloth now refers to a plain-weave Cotton or linen fabric made opaque by fillers, sizing, and/or glazing. Holland cloth is used for window shades, lamp shades, bookbinding, upholstery, labels, and gummed tapes.

What is glazed linen?
Glazed linen appears in the 18thc on into the 20th century. Used for hat liners, sleeve linings, pocket linings, stays and linings in general, the glazed finish of the linen gave it a smooth, hard finish that held up to the rigors of use.
What is a beetling shed?
The most interesting aspect of our tour was to view the beetling shed. A process unique to William Clark, linen is placed over horizontal wooden beams which are pounded with squared off vertical beams in an undulating loud fashion that can be seen in the short video below.
Why is linen clothing so expensive?
Linen is expensive since it’s hard to weave. Linen fiber is inelastic and easy to break in the production process, that’s why its cost of production is higher than most of the fabrics. Remember! You get what you pay for!
