What part of the throat allows you to speak?
The larynx (voice box) is the area that connects the throat to the windpipe (trachea). Without it, we would hardly be able to sing or speak. It also keeps food and drink out of the windpipe.
How does the larynx produce voice?
The vocal folds (vocal cords) are attached within the larynx to the largest of the laryngeal cartilages known as the thyroid cartilage or “Adam’s apple”. The vocal folds produce sound when they come together and then vibrate as air passes through them during exhalation of air from the lungs.

The voice box (larynx) and vocal folds (sometimes called vocal cords) comprise the vibratory system of the voice mechanism. The vocal tract is comprised of resonators which give a personal quality to the voice, and the modifiers or articulators which form sound into voiced sounds.

What causes a quivering voice?
Tremor: Tremor of the throat or vocal cords can cause changes that make the voice sound “shaky” or unsteady, and it may overlap with the diagnosis of spasmodic dysphonia. Tremor may occur in the muscles of the throat or vocal cords alone but often is part of a systemic tremor that affects the neck, hands, arms or legs.
Can you talk without a voicebox?
Total laryngectomy removes your larynx (voice box), and you won’t be able to speak using your vocal cords. After a laryngectomy, your windpipe (trachea) is separated from your throat, so you can no longer send air from your lungs out through your mouth to speak.
Can you live without a larynx?
As air is exhaled past the vocal folds, they vibrate and produce the sounds heard in voiced speech. If the larynx is removed, air can no longer pass from the lungs into the mouth. The connection between the mouth and the windpipe no longer exists.
