What is SOS signal?
SOS Signal is an internationally recognized Morse code distress signal which is a combination of dots and dashes. Commonly, SOS stands for ‘Save Our Souls’ or ‘Save our Ship’ but in reality, it’s not an abbreviation. In Morse code, three dots stand for ‘S’ and three dashes stand for ‘O’.
Why is SOS a thing?
Simply, SOS was chosen as a distress signal because it was easy to understand in Morse code and not likely to be confused with other signals. It also has the added benefit of being a palindrome, a series of letters that reads the same backwards and forwards.
How do you tap out SOS in Morse code?
Here’s an example: SOS . . . – – – . . . can be sent by paddling thumb and holding for three dots, index finger for three dashes, and thumb for three dots. That’s only three presses with the paddle for the complete word, versus nine presses on a traditional Morse key!
What was the distress call before SOS?

But before “SOS” was the international distress symbol, “CQD” did the job. The signal “CQD” was derived from an earlier code, “CQ,” commonly used by telegraphers and wireless operators to address all stations at once.
How do you signal SOS?
To signal an SOS using a flashlight, point it towards your target and flash it thrice in quick succession, followed by three longer flashes and three more quick flashes. The target will understand this Morse code and come to your rescue.
Does SOS work without signal?
If you are physically in an area with no service, then no it will not work. It cannot work if there are no cellular towers (or wifi if the device is setup for WiFi calling) as it cannot place a call at all then.
How do you respond to SOS?
Repeat “MAYDAY” and name of vessel, spoken once. Give position of vessel by latitude or longitude or by bearing (true or magnetic, state which) and distance to a well-known landmark such as a navigational aid or small island, or in any terms which will assist a responding station in locating the vessel in distress.
How do you knock SOS?
In the language of Morse code, the letter “S” is three short dots and the letter “O” is three longer dashes. Put them together and you have S.O.S.
