How does a fluorescent light tube work?
A fluorescent lamp, or fluorescent tube, is a low-pressure mercury-vapor gas-discharge lamp that uses fluorescence to produce visible light. An electric current in the gas excites mercury vapor, which produces short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp to glow.
Are fluorescent tubes light?
A fluorescent lamp or tube is a low pressure, mercury vapour gas discharge lamp that works on the principle of fluorescence to produce visible light. An incandescent light bulb is an electric light with a wire filament heated to such a high temperature that it produces light.
How effective is fluorescent tube compared to light bulb?
A fluorescent bulb can produce between 50 and 100 lumens per watt. This makes fluorescent bulbs four to six times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. That’s why you can buy a 15-watt fluorescent bulb that produces the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb.
Why do fluorescent tubes not produce heat?
Fluorescent lights are more efficient than incandescent bulbs for two reasons: Incandescent bulbs create light through a heated filament and therefore create a lot of wasted energy through this heat, fluorescent tubes don’t get as hot as the current flowing through them creates UV light at a low pressure.
How tube light circuit is connected and how it works?
Working Principle of Tube Light When the switch is ON, full voltage will come across the tube light through ballast and fluorescent lamp starter. Then gas inside the starter gets ionized due to this full voltage and heats the bimetallic strip that is caused to be bent to connect to the fixed contact.
What is a tube light?
Tube light is a lamp that works on low pressure mercury vapor discharge phenomenon and converts ultra violate ray into visible ray with the help of phosphor coated inside glass tube.
What is a fluorescent material?
Fluorescence is the ability of certain chemicals to give off visible light after absorbing radiation which is not normally visible, such as ultraviolet light.
How much electricity does a fluorescent tube light use?
CFLs use 1/3rd to 1/5th the electrical power of incandescent lighting and can last 8 to 15 times longer. An average CFL bulb which provides 800 lumens will use only 13 to 15 watts compared to a similar incandescent bulb which uses 60 watts.
Are fluorescent lights AC or DC?
Fluorescent tubes are almost always powered with AC, but this circuit uses DC. Basically, this circuit is a voltage doubler composed by two 1N4007 diodes and two high voltage electrolytic capacitors of 10 μF 350 V. Such capacitors can be easily salvaged from compact fluorescent lamps.
Do fluorescent tubes contain mercury?
On average, CFLs contain about four milligrams of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. No mercury is released when the bulbs are intact (i.e., not broken) or in use, but mercury vapor and very small beads of mercury can be released when a CFL is broken.
Where does the fluorescence come from in a fluorescent lamp?
Inside the lamp end of a preheat bi-pin lamp. In this lamp the filament is surrounded by an oblong metal cathode shield, which helps reduce lamp end darkening. A fluorescent lamp, or fluorescent tube, is a low-pressure mercury-vapor gas-discharge lamp that uses fluorescence to produce visible light.
How does a cold cathode fluorescent lamp work?
and Cold Cathode Lamps: Fluorescent lamps work by ionizing mercury vapor in a glass tube. causes electrons in the gas to emit photons at UV frequencies. The UV light is converted into standard visible light using a phosphor coating
When was the first induction fluorescent lamp made?
Induction lamps are a form of fluorescent lamps but they don’t have electrodes. We have a separate page for them here. The standard fluorescent lamp was developed for commercial use during the 1930’s.
What kind of gas is in a fluorescent lamp?
A fluorescent lamp tube is filled with a gas containing low pressure mercury vapour and noble gases at a total pressure of about 0.3% of the atmospheric pressure.
