The length of your test buttonhole should be equal to half the circumference plus 1/8 inch. If your button is very thick, you may need to increase the size a little more. Test the size before making any buttonholes on your garment (Figure 1).
Measure your button by wrapping twill tape or seam binding around the button’s widest point and pinning the tape together. The button width will be half of this measurement. To determine your buttonhole length, add ⅛” to the button width. If your buttons are thick add a little more than ⅛” to the length.
How do you measure a button?
Button Sizes – HOW ARE BUTTONS MEASURED? Buttons are measured in “ligne” which is a French term to measure length. A ligne measurement starts at 1 and is abbreviated to 1L. The L is measured across the diameter of the button using the widest portion.

“Common shirt lore is that the last hole is sewn horizontally so that button and button-hole can endure more stress from pulling,” Olberding says. For one, vertical buttonholes are easier to fasten. They also look cleaner since the buttons are less likely to shift away from the center of the buttonhole.
What is a standard button size?
The standard button size can vary depending on how you’re using them. A standard campaign button size is typically 2.25 inch round. Our large buttons— 3 inch round— are often used for photo buttons. Buttons sold by artists are often 1.5 inch round or 1.25 inch round.
Where should buttons be on a shirt?
If you’re wearing a men’s shirt, the buttons are usually on the right. If it’s a women’s shirt, they’re usually on the left.
