What replaced the KGB?
The immediate predecessor of the FSB was the Federal Counterintelligence Service (FSK) of Russia, itself a successor to the KGB: on 3 April 1995, Russian president Boris Yeltsin signed a law mandating a reorganization of the FSK, which resulted in the creation of the FSB.
What is the difference between the KGB and the NKVD?
The NKVD was a larger organization that had many functions. The Cheka and the KGB, were both smaller organizations with fewer functions. The KGB became the secret police for internal affairs but was also responsible for counter-intelligence within the Soviet Union and for espionage outside the country.
What came after the Cheka?
On February 6, 1922, after the Ninth All-Russian Soviet Congress, the Cheka was dissolved by VTsIK, “with expressions of gratitude for heroic work.” It was replaced by the State Political Administration or OGPU, a section of the NKVD of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR).

In the 1980s, Soviet Union glasnost provoked KGB Chairman Vladimir Kryuchkov (in office: 1988–1991) to lead the August 1991 Soviet coup d’état in an attempt to depose President Mikhail Gorbachev. The failed coup d’état and the collapse of the USSR heralded the end of the KGB on 3 December 1991.
Does Russia still have KGB?
