Gear rattle is an impact induced-noise caused by the unloaded gear pairs of the gearbox. It is diagnosed with a higher intensity in diesel vehicle engines at low or idle speed, such as buses and trucks in a traffic jam, and in a more specific way found when a resonance for the whole driveline is excited.
