What should I set my mower deck to?
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck. Naturally, this makes the sweet spot about 1/4-inch of pitch, depending on the mower model.
How do I know what John Deere mower deck I have?
The model serial number of a John Deere lawn mower is printed on an identification tag located on the left side of the deck (standing behind the mower). The serial number (PIN) is 13 or 17 digits long.
What height should you set your lawn mower?
The top setting for most mowers gives a cutting height between 3.25 and 4 inches. This is best for your lawn, but at a setting of 4 inches you may sometimes see some “laying-over” of turf blades that some people find undesirable. For this reason, some people prefer to mow at 3 or 3.5 inches.

Yes, lawnmower decks are largely interchangeable. Engines will swap without issue, however, blades and drive systems may differ.
Do all lawn mower engines have the same bolt pattern?
If you do not know the horsepower exactly, that’s OK since most engines within a power range have a similar pattern for the bolts that mount the engine. For example, most 3 to 5 HP engines have the same bolt pattern. This is rarely a problem unless you are moving up to a larger engine for more power.

Lie down on the ground next to the elevated mower, and pass the tape measure beneath the blades, hooking it on the opposite side of the deck. Note the distance on the tape measure. This is your deck size.
What model is my John Deere?
Finding your model number and serial number is as easy as locating the identification tag on your machine. As seen in the example, the model number will be displayed below the MODEL heading (Example: Z235), and the serial number will be underlined on the top-right corner of the tag (Example: 130002).
