How does the body respond to the brain?

How does the body respond to the brain?

When a message comes into the brain from anywhere in the body, the brain tells the body how to react. For example, if you touch a hot stove, the nerves in your skin shoot a message of pain to your brain. The brain then sends a message back telling the muscles in your hand to pull away.

What are the nerves leading from the brain to the body called?

Cranial nerves and spinal nerves Nerves that directly connect the brain and the brain stem with the eyes, ears, nose, and throat and with various parts of the head, neck, and trunk are called cranial nerves. There are 12 pairs of them (see Overview of the Cranial Nerves.

What sends signals to and from the brain?

Your nervous system uses specialized cells called neurons to send signals, or messages, all over your body. These electrical signals travel between your brain, skin, organs, glands and muscles.

How does the brain send messages to body parts?

Neurons communicate with each other by sending chemical and electrical signals. Each neuron is connected with other neurons across tiny junctions called “synapses”. Impulses rush along tiny fibres, like electrical wires, from one neuron to the next. Electrical impulses travel through neurons.

Which is a reflex response?

A reflex is an involuntary (say: in-VAHL-un-ter-ee), or automatic, action that your body does in response to something — without you even having to think about it. You don’t decide to kick your leg, it just kicks. There are many types of reflexes and every healthy person has them. In fact, we’re born with most of them.

How does the brain communicate with the rest of the body?

Command center. This area of the brain communicates with the rest of the body through the autonomic nervous system, which controls such involuntary body functions as breathing, blood pressure, heartbeat, and the dilation or constriction of key blood vessels and small airways in the lungs called bronchioles.

What is the function of the brain in the human body?

The brain is a complex organ that controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger and every process that regulates our body. Together, the brain and spinal cord that extends from it make up the central nervous system, or CNS.

Where does the central nervous system connect to the brain?

This portion of the central nervous system runs down the inside of the spinal column, connecting the brain with nerves going to the rest of the body. The frontal lobe, located behind the forehead, does much of the work of complex thinking, like planning, imagining, making decisions, and reasoning.

Where does the stress response take place in the brain?

The stress response begins in the brain (see illustration). When someone confronts an oncoming car or other danger, the eyes or ears (or both) send the information to the amygdala, an area of the brain that contributes to emotional processing. The amygdala interprets the images and sounds.
