In the case of Pittsburg (or Pittsburgh), the “burg” indicates its original role as a defensive fortification. Of the string of burgs covering the route between it and Philadelphia, some of those founded before 1776 may also have been fortified towns originally. “Burg” is the German word for a fortified town or castle.
