‘Shabine’ is the story of Justene, a mixed race woman who is constantly mocked for being poor, of mixed heritage, and presumably promiscuous. The story opens with the narrator explaining that she had a fiery temper, which she unleashed on her tormentors when provoked.

Shabine is a word which means mulatto in English. It appears from our story that in St Lucia, where our story is set, the word is used to insult and belittle one. In fact, in St Lucia this name/title is given to any woman who is very light-skinned and has red or gold hair.
