Are chaffinches migratory?
Do chaffinches migrate? During the autumn our chaffinches, which are mostly sedentary, are joined by large numbers of chaffinches from Scandinavia and Finland. In some years, these migrant birds can almost double our population.
Do chaffinches like mealworms?
It’s common to hear Chaffinches before seeing them, as their prominent, loud and varied calls are noticed before they are directly observed. Their main diet is comprised of insects and seeds – bird seed mixes, mealworms and suet are great starting points for feeding Chaffinches in your garden.
Where do chaffinches go in the winter?
The male chaffinch is a home bird, and a tough little guy to boot. He remains close to his territory, even when winter rolls around. The female has different ideas and chooses to head south, especially if the winter is a particularly cold one.
Where do chaffinches build their nests?
Chaffinches build their compact cup-shaped nests in the forks of trees or hedges, and once complete, they will have one brood of around 4-5 eggs, which will be incubated for 11-13 days by the female. Once the young have hatched, they fledge and leave the nest after a further 13-14 days.
Do chaffinches eat sunflower hearts?
Whilst we’re mentioning hanging feeders, Chaffinches will readily go onto them to eat smaller seeds and sunflower hearts – the latter is a real favourite – but they can struggle a bit on feeders with straight perches (often fluttering their wings to gain balance which uses up valuable energy in the winter months).
Do female chaffinches sing?
Males not only sing, but also have a lot of different kinds of calls, more than females. In winter, the sexual contrast disappears; the call repertoire of non-breeding male chaffinches shrinks from eight call types, plus song, down to two (Fig. 5.1).

Where do chaffinches sleep?
